I've been wondering how many people use the MX-8 midi
patchbay/processor,
and how you are using it. Is anyone using the delay or compander features?
Just wondering...

I wish to thanks Robert for this mailing list and hope many of you will
join us! :)
Specially now when SBlive seems to be the long awaited
PCI-32Meg-low-cost-sampler!
Is there any date for the upcoming Vienna 2.3?

hey Bob,
I'm just going off to promote the list in a few newsgroups. I want to get a
wider variety of users and have spotted some composition groups that might
add some interest. I'll also go for the midi and soundcard people as I
promised to make this go beyond the Awe cards.
By the way, your post about the DMC MX-8 was the very first message to be
sent and I'm afraid there won't have been to many people to see it. I'll
report regularly on the number of users here... which currently (after two
and a half days) stands at.... just looking.. 8
:)
You've just given me an idea; I'll go and create a page on the site where
new subscribers can post a description of their gear and interests for
others to peruse.
That might help to stimulate discussion.

Hi all,
I've just been looking around for prices and avilability of the Soundblaster
Live and found a handy page on CNET listing online sources and current
pricing.
It also states whether or not the store sells to customers outside the US.
I'd be interested if anyone has had any experience with any of these
companies.

I'm getting tyred of buying new computer stuff. This card properbly needs a
new computer and if it doesn't it needs a new monitor (17inch or bigger,
just like the new cakewalk) or... whatever. Those software developers and
manufactures think that money grows on a tree in my garden!!!

Ok lets get it straight :
1) Where in Europe is the Sb Live available ? Does anybody know any on
line european stores ?
2) Ppl who own the card : any negative comments ? can you use the
card for live fx on live analog input ?
3) How come the card is so damn cheap for its features ? (my musician
store refused to order it for me , because of its price, soundblaster
bliah, etc.
Salutations everybody
Well.. oh well..! So much for support! Have a nice day!

Seeing as how a great amount of curiosity has arisen about the Live on
the list, maybe I can shed a bit of light on it. I've had a card for
review for a while so can finally let you in on it as it's been released
in the US.
The Live is basically way out there in terms of features....after all
it's based on the same EMU10K1 chip that powers the EMU APS card.
Although some of the features are implemented differently and the
software is tailored to a wider audience this card is streets ahead of
everything else out there and at a sweet price!
You can check out all the marketing and cover type info on sblive.com
but here's some hands on user feedback:
*****Immediate features (relative to pc based audio for musicians rather
than gamers):
*****Digital I/O, most other brands currently charge extra for this
feature on their sub 400 cards....maxisound, terratec, tbeach...
the latest drivers on the asia website overcome copy protection issues
and allow you to copy directly from samples cd's, DAT and minidisc,
saving you the hassle of DAE ripping.
CD SPDIF connector...clean as a whistle CD audio.
*****Realtime Hardware FX:
no cpu load and fx that would put a midiverb to shame and make a lex
shift uneasily in it's rack. 10 parameters available for
reverb......with up to 20s delay!!!
Other fx include ring modulation, pitch shifter (way cool and highly
effective, based on the tech that runs the pitch shifting on the EMU pro
range) and distortion....beefs up your synths and even sounds good on
your guitar!
fx have wet and dry mix controls for all sources...
you can plug in your mic and record your voice pitch shifted, connect
your guitar and add chorus and distortion....and even resample original
samples without having to hook a cable from the out back to the in
*****Multiple streams of audio:
Open up Wave Studio 4, open up explorer and drag in a mix of up to 32
wave files, (of any sample rate, mono or stereo 8/16 bit), tile and hit
play all.....all of them will play back simultaneously...a bit of a
cacophony but it proves the point..
You can also play all of these back and in the same windows open a new
empty .wav file and record the ouput of all this playback into a new
file!!....while adding FX to the entire output prior to record!
this has a big relevance in the Direct X realm where hardware buffers
can be used, making game playback smoother and leveraging software such
as rebirth or VST which can use DX plugins and also 3.55 which allows
use of a DX driver in place of ASIO
*****64 voice hw synth:
People are being swamped by marketing numbers and forgetting to think in
realistic terms.
If you go out and buy an EMU sampler you're likely to get 32 voices, the
EIV can be expanded
to 128 but at a total cost of about 4000!!! here you're getting a
comparable quality synth with downloadable soundsets of most of EMU's
greatest modules (orbit, vintage keys etc) 100's of other 3rd party
soundfont makers sets.
And how does it sound....clear as a bell!!
Not currently bundled with vienna however, fonts created with vienna and
other editors are still compatible.
The synth is sf 2.1 compatible with further extensions to the sf
property sets including realtime mapping of eg velocity to mod type
controls.
The synth is also split into 2 ports so instead of having one port
SBLIVE MIDI SYNTH with 16 channels and 64 voices, they have given it two
access ports A and B which gives you 32 channels!
*****192 voice sw synth
this is a pci wavetable set with a lot in common with that used by the
PCI64 offering a massive 192 voice polyphony
no user configurable sets available as yet.
*****PCI/RAM for Soundfonts...
no more buying proprietary RAM for your soundcard, just take advantage
of the cheap RAM and buy yourself an extra 32/64M and get a double
whammy by accelerating your machine performance while giving yourself a
huge amount of sample memory....remember that an ESI4000 only ships with
about 4M ram onboard and that AKAI samplers that take proprietary memory
could leave you financially bereft for the price of 16M!
Even thought the specs quote up to 32M of ram for sf use, practice has
shown that up to half of your system RAM can be used.....on a 256M
system I had 128M of samples loaded!
*****Midi ports:
These are now included on mini din connectors (two connectors one for
in, one for out) on the audio extension board which you sit in a spare
backplate.
you get small mini din to standard female midi din connectors which
means that you can just hook your standard midi cable directly to the
card.....you can still use a midi adapter cable (you don't get one) for
the joystick port but both can't be used simultaneously for inputs.
*****Multiple speaker
mainly for games at the moment but shipping with full retail version of
unreal which supports true 4 speaker surround....this is
impressive...believe me!
also allows routing of conventional sources such as CD audio thru 4
speakers.
allows you to pan a source visually in a 4 speaker space
the audio extension board has a digital din which will allow connection
to future digital decoders for a max 8 speakers!
*****Audio quality
clean as a whistle.....we've been using it to do commercial screen cam
demos and other music projects.
*****Software:
The interfaces could possible do with a bit of tidying for ease of use
but at least you can get at all the functions without too much trouble.
Euro bundle is slightly different from US, bundled with Cubasis AV and
Mixman as well as Soundforge XP4....this makes the bundle even more
attractive considering the off the shelf prices of AV and SF...you
basically get the card free! AV has the same sf support for the live as
with the AWE.
*****OS Support
All of the creative apps work in 95, 98 and NT4...and oh, yes......it's
an unbeatable gamer's card too!
the suggested RRP in the UK is about 199.....not sure what price dealers
will actually advertise at.
I've also had my hands on the EAPS so I'll try and put together a taster
on that for you.
I've seen the future and it's 10K1!
bye 4 now
Audiohead.
Come on! there must be somebody out there with a SBLive! interested in
other thing than AC3
and Dolby sourround :) Perhaps somebody can confirm that you can upload a
SF2 as long as half the size of your available RAM? CL site says 32Mb but
it seems it can be larger! :)

heh.. dunno, hands up anyone who even owns one.
I hope to soon, but for the moment everything seems to just a lot of rumours
and heresay. On that point my guess is that 32MB is officially supported,
but you can set it higher depending on your resources and hardware. Don't
quote me though :)

Hi George,
I've just tried out Rebirth alongside the new Win98 Multimedia Player
update. and sure enough DirectX 6.0 mixes everything very nicely.
In the Case of Cakewalk (which I have yet to test) it would appear to be a
matter of setting it to use the Driectshow driver under Tools\Audio
Hardware\
This is of course only for Cake 7.0 and up as 6.0 doesn't support DirectX.
The only thing that bugs me is that the list calls it Directshow5.1 which I
believe does not allow multiple source mixing. However, that may just be
what's written on the list and in fact it will be using the version that is
currently installed on the particular pc.
.........doing some quick trials......
umm... it seems that Cake 7.0 will not play alongside Rebirth. I'm wondering
if it has something to do with the fact that Cake holds my SB 240 OUT and IN
for synchronisation.
VST is behaving as it should when using DirectX drivers. (apart from that it
almost never behaves though) I loaded up the Audio/Midi demo and after
setting the preferences to play audio in the background I fired up Rebirth
and let it fly.
It works perfectly.
Looks like Cakewalk isn't going to work until at least the next release
(please prove me wrong someone)
Just as we are getting soundcards that handle multiple audio streams, the
software has also finally implemented it..... jinxed.
Regards

Hi, all. I just joined the list yesterday. Havent gotten any
messages
yet so I thought I say whats up. My name's Reverend 7 and I'm in Hell
aka Louisiana. I listen to "Industrial", "Metal", and
"Rock." (e.x.
NIN, Marilyn Manson, Rammstien, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Skinny Puppy,
Acid Bath, ect..) As of right now I have a 486DX2 with 8mb's ram and a
528MB HDD. Pretty pathetic huh? I'm buying a new PC in the next 2
weeks which is the main reason I joined this list. I'll get to that
later.
Sampled and Souless,

I wanted to get you peoples opions on a PC I'm getting ready to buy.
Here's the configuration:
Intel PII 300MHz
Intel 440BX ASUS Mother Board
64 MB SDRAM
4.3 GB Ultra DMA Western Digital HDD
Sound Blaster AWE 64
Will this setup be suffice for now? I'm going to be using soft.
samplers until I get me A3k. Then I'll be using it for HD recording.
Alot of people suggested SCSI but I cant really afford it. I'll be
getting a 2nd hard drive and Jazz drive and maxing out the ram later on
when I start recording. How many stero tracks do you think I would get
with the setup right now? Anybody know any places online where I can
buy customized PC's besides Gateway and Dell? Thanks alot.
